Ryushin Shouchi-ryu Iaido is a small style originally from Kyushu. Training involves solo kata, partner kata, and various Kihon Waza affiliated with the style. Ryushin Shouchi-ryu is unusual in its use of a smaller, lighter-weight sword and many one-handed techniques. Retired Headmaster Terutaka Kawabata and current Headmaster Kunikazu Yahagi of the Seiseikan Dojo in Tokyo guide our training in this style. Training consists of both solo and partner forms.
Ryushin Shouchi-ryu Iaido places great importance on developing proper posture and movement through the practice of walking methods called keiko ho. Keiko ho involves stepping forward and backward while turning the body slightly sideways. By moving the feet in this manner, the practitioner can develop stability and control over balance and positioning.
Another important aspect of Ryushin Shouchi-ryu Iaido training is the use of ki development exercises. Ki refers to the concept of internal energy or life force in Eastern thought. Developing ki allows the practitioner to sense and respond to attacks without conscious effort.
Aside from physical technique, Ryushin Shouchi-ryu Iaido stresses mental discipline and character development. Students learn to maintain a calm mindset even under duress and to act decisively yet humanely in dangerous situations.
Mr. Barrett has been training in martial arts since 1973. He holds a 5th Dan, Renshi in Ryushin Shouchi-Ryu Iaido (Japanese Sword) by Soke Kunikazu Yahagi from Japan. Also is ranked 4th Dan in Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu, under Sensei Jerry Figgiani president of SRKDI.
